I have a huge supply of bale twine. It comes off small rectangular hay bales. I feed about a bale of hay each day to my alpacas. I have been saving my twine since 2002 when I first got alpacas. It is plastic – mostly orange, tho I do have some yellow. It will be dusty from being in the barn and probably have some hay still in it. Just open the package outside and the birds will have some new material for nest-building!
It is in loops about 3.5 ft long (about 7 ft if cut). These are not cut, it is easy to tie loops together and use doubled.
A medium flat rate box holds a good amount – enough to experiment with for a cost of $10.70 in postage. If you want more, I will stuff a large flat rate box for you for $14.50 in postage.
Here is a rug / mat that I started – my first ever so it is a little funky in the center.
It is actually rather comfortable to walk on – even barefoot. I think it would a good welcome mat or deck rug – it will never rot! Here is the site with instructions. I just don’t have time to make these or use all the twine I get.

Ooohhh, love the rug! I might have to steal some bale twine from my mom’s barn and give it a try… :)
I was surprised by how soft it was on bare feet! And there is a LOT of bale twine to be had out there. I would be just as happy to hear that people get twine from a neighbor! Any saved from the landfill is a good thing!
you have been saving twine for nearly 8 years??? bravo my dear. :) I think the rug will be super cute.
Nice job on the blog. I was hoping that the etsy thread would take off.
I have colorful fabric snippets that I would like to add.
Additionally, I have being making envelopes that are a heavy plastic from work that I sandwich tissue in between. I could provide that as well. Can we post pics?
Absolutely! Email me @ emily@teaandlaundry.com and I will add you as a contributor.
You can host pictures from off-site (flickr, etc.) or you can upload them directly to wordpress.
I would like to order the large box from you. How do I pay you for it?
Katie,
You can send me a check for $14.50 (the postage cost of large flat rate box). Email me at teredarl {at} sherbtel.net for my address. Once I get the check and your address, I’ll pack up a box and send it back to you.
